A Dickinson woman was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when a pickup struck her and her bicycle in a crosswalk and fled the scene.

Around 4:00 P.M., dispatch received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a female had just been struck by a silver pickup at the intersection of West Villard and 3rd Avenue West. The pickup fled the scene at a high rate of speed westbound on West Villard. Dickinson Police, along with Dickinson Ambulance and Dickinson Fire Department, responded to the scene and began to render aid to the 31-year-old victim. She was transported to St. Alexius CHI Hospital in Dickinson with serious injuries.

Based on initial investigations, officers determined the victim was attempting to cross West Villard on her bicycle going southbound. The silver pickup had also been traveling southbound on 3rd Avenue West and began a right-hand turn onto westbound West Villard when the collision occurred. The victim was thrown from her bicycle. The driver of the pickup then fled the scene.

Officers and Detectives developed several leads and located a vehicle matching the description of the pickup parked in the driveway of a residence in the 200 block of 4th Street West about 45 minutes later. The driver of the pickup was also located a short time after and transported to the Public Safety Center for an interview. The resulting investigation developed probable cause to arrest 38-year-old MICHAEL CHANCE COPELAND of Dickinson for alleged Duty in Accident Involving Serious Injury, which is a Class C felony. COPELAND was transported to the Southwest Mulit-County Correctional Center where he awaits a bond hearing.

If any citizens have video evidence or otherwise witnessed the incident, you are asked to contact the Dickinson Police Department at 701-456-7759 and reference case number DPD23-8052.
