What is a chip seal?
A chip seal is a road surface treatment process that involves several steps. First, the contractor
will sweep the entire street to remove debris and prepare the surface. Then, a layer of oil will
be applied to the street, followed by the application of uniform aggregate, typically referred to
as “chips”. These chips are then compacted into the oil using rollers. The loose chips will be
swept up initially within 1 to 2 days following the chip seal. Once the final sweeping is
completed, a fog of oil will be applied to the roadway surface, then "No Parking" signs will be
removed
How long does it take to chip seal a street?
Chip sealing is a swift operation, with the contractor capable of chip sealing several miles of
streets in a single day.
Can I drive on the chip seal?
You can drive on the chip seal once the chips have been compacted. However, please be
cautious when driving over the surface that still has loose chips. Drive carefully to prevent
kicking up loose chips. If loose chips become stuck to your vehicle's tires, try to safely pull over
in a designated area and remove them. You can use a broom or brush to gently dislodge the
chips.
Why have “No Parking” signs been installed in my neighborhood?
"No Parking" signs on both sides of the street indicate chip sealing operations will be/are
occurring. No on-street parking is allowed between 7:00 AM and 8:00 PM, where “No Parking”
signs are posted.
Can I park in my driveway?
Yes, no work is planned beyond the curb, so you can park in your driveway without any issues.

Can I park on the street during the day until the crew shows up on the street?
It's not advisable to park on the street during the day when “No Parking” signs are present.
These signs indicate work is planned in the very near future. Crews will need to work swiftly
and might arrive on the scene without much prior notice.
When can I park on the street again during daylight hours?
You can park on the street during daylight hours once the “No Parking” signs have been
removed. This will indicate that the proposed work is complete, and the street is safe for
regular use.
Will emergency services be affected by the project?
Emergency services have been informed about the planned project. While access will be
maintained, it's advisable to be extra cautious when emergency vehicles are navigating the
area.
What if I have landscaping or items near the edge of the street?
Items outside of the sidewalk or right-of way are typically not affected; however, if you have
landscaping or other items near the edge of the street, it's a good idea to remove such movable
items for their protection.
How can I stay updated on the progress of the project?
You can stay informed about the project's progress through the City's social media posts or by
reaching out to the city engineering department.
Will there be any changes to garbage collection or mail delivery during the project?
Garbage collection and mail delivery will generally proceed as usual, with minimal disruptions.
The contractor will be informed of the city garbage routes and they are required to work
around the schedule to keep service on its regular schedule.
What should I do if I have concerns or issues during the project?
If you have any concerns or encounter issues related to the road maintenance project, feel free
to contact the city engineering department. They will be able to address your questions and
assist with any problems you may encounter.
Will I get assessed for this project?
No chip sealing costs will be assessed to landowners.
